Monique dives daily into the beautiful underwater world of Honduras

Monique from Honduras has two passions: scuba diving and photography. She takes you with her into her underwater world where swimming with sharks, and weightless floating above the corals, makes you realize how important our oceans are! From childhood on I have always loved swimming. I used to live near or at the water, and until this day, the beautiful bay in Roatan is my backyard. Being in the water feels liberating, underwater, above water, floating in the water, it doesn’t matter, it relaxes me. What is that feeling I have over and over again with water…? Maybe I was a dolphin in my past life? I am always triggered by the unknown, want to explore depths and go where most people don’t (dare to) go. Probably that’s why I ended up in Honduras, which literally means ‘depths’ in Spanish. Swinging, being weightless and just be as invisible as long as possible When I dive at a depth of 35 meters, sometimes all kinds of thoughts go through my mind. Floating between the schools of fish and beautiful corals makes me realize that I am a lucky person. Maybe I am sometimes ‘narced,’ which is slang for having nitrogen narcosis. […]

10 Tips for Shooting Stunning Photos of Scuba Divers

Most of the photos we take in the ocean are of animals, corals, and other little critters. But why not also include a diver in your photos, or even capture nice underwater portraits of them? Adding divers to your photos adds an extra dimension to them. It also very nicely portrays the interaction between the diver and the animal, which helps illustrate the human element of scuba diving. The viewer will be able to better perceive the actual scale of the scene within the photo – even more so when you use a wide-angle lens. This concept can even be as simple as why not just take a cool shot of your buddy underwater? In some cases, I can imagine an underwater photographer may feel a bit too advanced to capture simple moments of divers with their thumbs up? To me, it is a very rewarding process to work with divers as underwater models. In my experience, they love to have their pictures taken underwater or maybe even more excited to see themselves in a photo alongside a turtle, porcupine fish, shark or any other beautiful animal. Here are my 10 tips to taking stunning underwater photos of divers. #1 […]

Monique Tarée, a talented Dutch woman who fell in love with Honduras

https://www.televicentro.hn/noticias/detalle/5b8c519234b4b708a2928c6a/Monique-Taree-la-holandesa-que-le-entrego-su-corazon-a-Roatan This week I was featured by Televicentro HN, a TV channel in Honduras. The article was in Spanish, so hereby for my Englisch speaking friends to read the story! Lets meet Monique Tarée, a talented Dutch woman who fell in love with Honduras and shows the world the beauty of this country. Roatan always opens her heart to thousands of tourists who come to enjoy its beaches, sun and entertainment. But on this occasion a European woman gave her heart to this island. This is the story of Monique Tarée, originally from Amsterdam, Netherlands, who fell in love with this beautiful island, in the Islas de la Bahia, on the Honduran Atlantic coast at first sight. How is it possible for a woman from a first world country to abandon the comforts of home and live the rest of her life in Roatan? Honduras is said to have magnetism to those who visit it.  At the same time thousands of Hondurans emigrate to seek other opportunities abroad. And many Europeans and Americans choose to come to settle in the Bay Islands and Monique’s history is proof of this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6huDnwM7PD8 Tarée decided to make her first trip to Honduras in […]

The Eagle at Sunrise

The island life is sometimes hard to explain. So I am always pleasantly surprised if family or friends come my way to experience the laid back atmosphere here. It is even more fun if they like to dive. Annet, my friend from the Netherlands, came a few years ago to do her Padi advanced course with me. She likes the island, the diving, and me too and so she came for her 5th trip. My idea is to challenge her this time and do a different type of dive than she is used to. The Wreck El Aguila is a popular diving spot, at times there are more divers than fish. For that reason we will go to this wreck before dawn. I am not a morning person at all, so it will be a challenge for me too not to miss the alarm.   It is one of the three most important shipwreck dive sites off the coast of Roatan. According to the son of the former Mayor of Roatan, El Aquila was en route from Puerto Cortes, Honduras to Haîti with a cargo of concrete. The ship was wrecked near Utila, presumably by sabotage. For some years, El Aguila […]

Mrs. Hawksbill

Almost on every dive I have had the chance to swim with a turtle. They are far from shy. Mrs. Hawskbill in this picture swam straight towards me. At that moment all my camera settings were in macro, of course. But I captured her anyway. I saw the shadow on the bottom and that motivated me to be fast no matter what setting. The colors didn’t come out as I had wished, so yes why not turn it into black and white? I love her face in this photo. With her smiley hooked beak which is used to catch and eat sponges, jellyfish, algae and even fish. She likes to pose for me, like Doutzen Kroes. Like many sea turtles, hawksbills are a critically endangered species due mostly to human impact. Hawksbill eggs are still eaten around the world despite the turtle’s international protected status. They are often killed for their flesh and their stunning shells. I think she just got back from the surface to get some air. She was fast and on a mission! As sea turtles are air breathing reptiles, they need to surface to breathe. It is amazing that they can hold their breath for several […]
